Astrid Pérez has stood down as Mayor of Arrecife after being elected as the President of the Canarian Parliament yesterday.

Pérez was inaugurated in her new post yesterday, just a week after being appointed Mayor of Lanzarote’s capital following an agreement between her party, the PP, and the Coalición Canaría. She will be the first Lanzarote woman to head the Canarian Parliament.

Arrecife’s new Mayor will be Yonathan de León, who was third on the PP’s list for Arrecife, but he will still have to be officially inaugurated.

Alfred Mendoza, the Socialist candidate for Arrecife who won the most votes in the election but could not form a majority, described the decision as “a fraud”, and accused Pérez of treating Arrecife as “second best.”
