The festive transformation of Lanzarote’s capital has officially begun. Arrecife Ayuntamiento has started the installation of its Christmas lighting, promising a display that will feature new elements and, for the first time, bring the festive spirit directly to the entrances of the city’s neighbourhoods.
In a move to ensure the city is adorned well in advance of the holidays, Mayor Yonathan de León has directed the concessionaire company to accelerate the work schedule. The goal is for the switch-on ceremony to take place by the end of November.
This year’s display will see a significant upgrade, incorporating modern LED technology across the board to guarantee significantly lower energy consumption.
A key feature of this year’s decorations is a direct response to community feedback. Sustainable new elements will be placed at key neighbourhood points, fulfilling what the council describes as “a long-standing demand from residents for these special decorations to be placed at the entrances to their streets, roundabouts, and squares.”
Mayor Yonathan de León, who also heads the Department of Public Works, has been on the ground to see the progress firsthand. He has visited the neighbourhoods of San Francisco Javier, Tinasoria, and Lloret, where crews from the winning bidder are currently focusing their efforts. The company has a window of almost two months to complete the full installation across the city.
The mayor expressed his desire for the capital to become a festive hub for everyone, stating he wants “both residents and visitors to enjoy a wonderful experience once again, knowing that Christmas, with all its decorations and events, will be very much in evidence in the capital of Lanzarote.”
