Arrecife’s carnival got under way on Saturday evening and will continue until a week on Wednesday.

The official launch took place on Saturday evening, following a parade through the city centre led by the drums of the Villa Pipol batucada. The carnival was then officially opened by costume designers Jaime Romero, Toño Aparicio and Oswaldo Machín, who are this year’s guests of honour.

On Sunday, a special event in honour of Los Buches, the capital’s oldest carnival group, took place at midday, and the evening saw the spectacular election of the Carnival Queen.

Events will continue, with the big parade taking place next Monday, and the carnival ending with the Burial of the Sardine on Wednesday 22nd February.
