Central Arrecife has long been a nightmare for parents with pushchairs and wheelchair users, because of streets with extremely narrow pavements and various other obstacles. However, that will soon change.
However, three central streets will shortly be converted to be more accessible, with several more planned in the near future. Calles José Betancort and Periodista Viera, near the El Almacén arts centre, and Calle La Porra, will be the first streets to be renovated.
As the minimum accessible width of 1.80 metres for pavements is impossible on the streets, the project will involve total removal of pavements, leaving a single surface that can be used by both pedestrians and authorised vehicles.
Electricity cables, which can be seen festooning several Arrecife back streets, will also be buried.
