Arrecife Mayor, Yonathan de León, stated that “safety of the residents is the main concern”, however he also emphasised that “the damage caused by these acts of vandalism so far this year amounts to 30,000 euros (1,200 per container).”.
The Arrecife local police have opened an investigation to clarify the facts of the most recent attack to try and identify the perpetrator or perpetrators.
“Of the 25 containers that have been targeted by vandals in the first two months of 2024, 19 correspond to yesterday (22,800 euros)”. Councillor, Jacobo Lemes, pointed out that “so far we have suffered the burning of one or two containers every so often, but never had reached numbers like those of last night.”.
“The population is often unaware of what is involved in this type of vandalism, which is paid for with public money,” stated Lemes, who clarified that “fortunately there have been no personal injuries”.
To avoid further damage, Arrecife Ayuntamiento recommends “not to park vehicles in the vicinity of the waste collection points.”.
