The Lanzarote IRONMAN race started at Playa Grande this morning at 7 am.
Canarian President Ángel Victor Torres sounded the air horn that sent hundreds of athletes rushing into the sea for the first stage of the triathlon. He was accompanied by Cabildo President María Dolores Corujo and the ever-present figure of Kenneth Gasque, who pioneered Lanzarote’s biggest sporting event in 1991.
Weather conditions are perfect for the race, with some cloud cover and no high winds and elite competitors will be expected to cross the finishing line in Puerto del Carmen after 3 pm this afternoon. The rest will then have until midnight to complete the race.
Many roads on the island will be closed at certain times of day, so if you’re driving, plan your route before setting out. The road closures are as follows:
