A young American student remains missing after being swept out to sea at Los Charcones yesterday.

Four students from the USA, aged between 19 and 21, who are studying in Madrid and holidaying on Lanzarote, were involved in the incident, which was reported to emergency services at 3.07 pm.

Two of the students managed to reach safety, suffering light injuries, while another was rescued from the open sea by a GES helicopter. The fourth victim remains unaccounted for. A search was called off at 8pm and resumed at first light on Monday 26th January.

A yellow alert for rough seas from Spain’s weather agency, AEMET, was in place when the incident occurred, as well as an alert issued by the Canarian Government, which remains in place. The dirt track to Los Charcones had been closed off this weekend owing to the risky conditions.
