The seventh Yaiza Extremo Sur MTB took place this weekend, bringing cyclists from across the Canary Islands to southern Lanzarote for races over 60km and 30km. The event also included races for young riders and marked the final round of the 2026 Lanzarote-Fuerteventura Inter-Island Cup.

Friday afternoon saw young cyclists compete in several MTB school events, with family and friends watching from the sidelines.

The main races took place on Saturday, starting and finishing near the THB Tropical Island Hotel in Playa Blanca. Competitors enjoyed favourable weather as they tackled trails and tracks through the landscapes of southern Lanzarote.

Antonio Padrón wins 60km race

The 60km race started at 8am, with Antonio Padrón of Fuerteventura’s Velosa team taking first place in 2 hours, 31 minutes and 36 seconds.

César Vera, also from Velosa, finished second in 2:36:48, while Moisés Cava of A Más Viento Más Cadena came third in 2:36:51.

In the women’s race, Yurena Alonso of Velosa won in 3:23:08. Patricia Herrera finished second in 3:31:47, followed by Rachel Connerney in 3:55:40.

Padrón praised the course and organisation, particularly the technical trails, which added an extra challenge while allowing riders to enjoy the scenery.

Carlos Afonso wins 30km race on debut

The 30km race began at 9am, with Carlos Afonso of Harquo taking the men’s title in 1 hour, 19 minutes and 21 seconds.

Javier Díaz of Irichen finished second in 1:19:51, while Gabriel Pérez of CD El Aljibe took third place in 1:21:08.

Afonso, who travelled from La Palma to compete for the first time, said the course had lived up to expectations and that he was pleased he had made the journey to Lanzarote.

He added: “If I can, I’ll repeat this great experience next year.”

Yaiza Council welcomes event’s success

Yaiza Sports Councillor Ángel Lago said the organisers were pleased with how the competition had gone, both in terms of organisation and sporting results.

He also welcomed the decision to move the start and finish lines to Playa Blanca, saying participants had praised the routes and scenery.

The event ended with an awards ceremony attended by Lago, representatives from the THB Tropical Island Hotel and the organisers.

As the final race of the 2026 Lanzarote-Fuerteventura Inter-Island Cup, the ceremony also included the presentation of trophies and t-shirts to the Cup winners by the Canary Islands Cycling Federation.
