One of the oldest shops on Arrecife’s Calle Real, Almacenes Ferrer, has finally closed its doors.

The high-end fashion store sold brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren, as well as school uniforms, and the family that owns the shop had been operating on Arrecife’s main shopping street for 80 years.

Two smaller boutiques remain in Puerto del Carmen and the Marina Rubicón in Playa Blanca, but the closure of the Arrecife branch appears to be yet another nail in the coffin of the capital’s commercial activity.

The closure of the Calle Real branch of Zara in 2021 two years before it re-opened at the Open Mall Lanzarote, was another death knell for Arrecife’s city centre, where previously busy streets such as Calle Canalejas are now full of shuttered premises.
