The newly-opened Sports Centre in Costa Teguise has received criticism for a lack of access for wheelchair users.

Members of the Adassa Hockey Club, which has pioneered wheelchair hockey on the island, complained that when they arrived at the centre totake part in a recent gala gathering of sports clubs, they discovered that it was impossible to mount the kerb as there was no ramp or slope.

Parents were forced into making a makeshift ramp by destroying traffic cones. They also criticised the absence of disabled parking spaces, which they claim is against the law.

A temporary metal ramp has since been installed outside the centre, but the incident shows that the issue of access is still overlooked or ignored in too many new projects.
