A 71-year-old British woman was rescued from Las Grietas yesterday after falling and twisting her ankle.

Firemen attended the scene, applied a splint to the woman’s leg and stretchered her to a waiting ambulance, which then transported her to the Dr José Molina Orosa Hospital.

Enrique Espinosa, chief of the island’s Emergency and Security Consortium, recently spoke of the increase in incidents involving foreigners above retirement age. The firemen carried out 40 rescues last year of this type and the incident at Las Grietas will be the 13th of 2024.

Talking of incidents at Montaña de la Corona, Los Ajaches and the Caldera Blanca, Espinosa said the problem was lack of preparation. “People don’t wear the correct footwear; they don’t study the terrain and they don’t take water.”
