62% of Canarians believe that tourism has been “very beneficial” for their island, according to the recent survey of attitudes towards tourism commissioned by the Canarian Institute of Statistics.
The figure rises to 68.8% on Lanzarote, where almost 70% of people believe that tourism should continue to be promoted.
The survey also found that a majority of Canarians believed tourism contributed to economic development, attracted investment and increased consumption of local products. However, they also think it increases house prices, rents and the cost of living, and creates precarious employment.
43.3% of Canarians believe a tourist tax should be introduced, with over 50% on Lanzarote supporting the measure.
