Coach Ian Kerr reports on the healthy youth rugby scene that can be found every Saturday morning at Playa Honda.

The Christmas festivities meant a pause in the calendar for the Lanzarote Rugby School. However, with the New Year and Kings’ Day behind us, training started afresh on the 11th January.

With renewed vigour, the youngsters got down to training and with several tournaments on the horizon, those unwelcome Christmas turkey kilos soon started to be shed. By week two of the New Year’s practice sessions, some 40 young participants were hitting the tackle pads, learning moves and preparing for upcoming tournaments both in February and in March.

These tournaments will take place on the other Canary Islands which have a rugby scene, and are always an exciting occasion, allowing youngsters to get to know fellow rugby players and get a glimpse of the other islands. Currently, there are rugby teams on Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, and the residents’ discount means that it’s relatively cheap and easy to tour.

The training sessions are organised by age, and there are four groups: under 6’s, under 10’s, under 14’s and under 18’s. This means all children are playing with others that are roughly of their own size.

Activities are led by several qualified coaches and ex- or current players of Lanzarote Rugby Team, and safety is a paramount consideration in the sessions. Parents are more than welcome to stick around to watch the kids train, or even to join in! As always, please feel free to come down to the pitch and see what it’s all about, check us out on Facebook or contact us on 630 817 234.

Sessions take place every Saturday morning from 10 am to 12 midday at the football pitch in Playa Honda. You just drive to the bottom of Calle Mastíl, turn right into the secondary school carpark at the roundabout and loop round to the right again to the stadium carpark.
