Bodegas El Grifo has been honoured with the Tourism Excellence Award at the 2025 Canary Islands Tourism Awards. The ceremony, held at the Teatro Circo de Marte in La Palma, recognised the winery’s impact as a cultural and tourist emblem.

Cabildo President, Oswaldo Betancort, has publicly congratulated the winery on this distinguished accolade. This award shines a light on the more than 250-year history of Bodegas El Grifo, the oldest winery in the Canary Islands and one of the ten oldest in Spain, applauding its unique ability to blend deep-rooted tradition with forward-thinking innovation.

In his statement, Betancort emphasised the winery’s significance to the island’s identity. “El Grifo is a living symbol of Lanzarote and its people. This Tourism Excellence Award recognises not only the winery’s winemaking tradition, but also the importance of a sector that gives our island its character and authenticity. Lanzarote is proud to see one of its most emblematic institutions, capable of combining history, innovation, and sustainability in a unique landscape such as La Geria, receive this award.”

He added, “Furthermore, with this recognition of Bodegas El Grifo, Lanzarote once again demonstrates that its strength as a destination stems from the link between the land, the people, and the ability to project a model based on authenticity, quality, and sustainability to the world.”

The award is seen as a powerful endorsement of Lanzarote’s tourism model, which is intrinsically linked to its natural and cultural heritage. Héctor Fernández, CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, noted how the winery’s success story aligns with the island’s strategic vision.

“The history of El Grifo and its management model are a benchmark for how local products, tradition, and innovation can go hand in hand with tourism promotion,” Fernández stated. “This award reinforces the strategy of linking Lanzarote to the authenticity of its territory and the quality of its wine tourism offerings.”

This award not only celebrates a beloved local institution but also solidifies Lanzarote’s position as a destination where world-class tourism is built on a foundation of authentic, sustainable, and high-quality experiences.
