Lanzarote Cabildo’s new campaign seeks to collect, digitise and share old photographs and films that document daily life in Lanzarote’s countryside, customs, trades, traditional tools, agriculture and more from the past.
This is a broad look at the rural world of the island, which includes everything from agricultural work to daily life of farmworkers, collecting visual testimonies of the human effort to adapt to a natural environment as unique as that of Lanzarote.
Cabildo councillor, Ascensión Toledo, underlined the importance of the project “Although we already have a lot of material, we are convinced that there are still many audiovisual archives about the rural life of Lanzarote that are not known and that it is worth rescuing and preserving. That is why our efforts are made available to the public through Memoria de Lanzarote, which digitises all those photos and films that reflect the rural memory of the island. In addition, it is a way to pay tribute to those who made life possible in this volcanic land”.
President of Los Campesinos, Miguel A. Corujo, stated that the campaign “is essential, as we are trying to preserve the memory of our farmers. We want to preserve their wisdom, their effort and their way of inhabiting the landscape, as they deserve to be remembered, shared and protected for future generations”.
The Cabildo and Los Campesinos call on the public to participate in this collective work by contributing images, videos or any visual document related to the farming world of Lanzarote. All material will be digitised, documented and made available to the public through the Memoria de Lanzarote website, thus achieving an accessible and living archive of the island’s memory.
Memoria de Lanzarote is responsible for making the free digitisation, return all originals and deliver a digitized copy to the owners. And all this free of charge.
