Spain officially published its new Law to Prevent Food Loss and Waste last week. The law will provide legal requirements for all supermarkets and restaurants to follow.
The aim of the law is to reduce food wastage by 50% by 2030, by improving the ways in which left-over food can be destined for human consumption or be used as animal fodder or compost.
The law will give consumers the right to take left-overs home from any catering establishment (with the exception of buffets) and places a requirement on the establishment to provide “doggy bags” or other containers.
Supermarkets will be encouraged to reduce waste by donating products that are near their sell-by date to charities or by discounting “ugly” fruit and vegetables.
More articles of the law will be introduced next year, requiring catering businesses to produce a waste management plan.
