Cabildo approves Sandos Papagayo hotel in Playa Blanca

The Cabildo’s general council has provisionally approved the touristic classification of the illegal Sandos Papagayo Hotel in Playa Blanca.

The decision reverses the position of the previous Cabildo government, which supported the closure and demolition of the hotel.

The Papagayo Arena, as it was known then, was first declared illegal in 2007, and was described as “criminal” in a judgment against ex-Yaiza Mayor José Francisco Reyes in 2016.  The hotel is judged to have cut off public access to Las Coloradas beach and exceeded its authorised height.  Nevertheless, it has remained open for more than fifteen years.

It will now be up to Yaiza Ayuntamiento and the Coastal Department to make the final decision on the hotel.
