The Socialist Party (PSOE) and the Nueva Canarias (NC-BC) political parties have added their support to the demonstration against mass tourism and overdevelopment on Saturday, which will be led by “normal citizens.”

The PSOE and NC-BC are the main opposition parties in the Canarian Government and most of Lanzarote’s institutions.

“The PSOE deeply respects and shares the motivation for these demonstrations, supporting sustainable tourism that is respectful of our territory; a tourism committed not only to quality but also to the progress and well-being of the Canary Islands,” said the Socialist party in an official press release.

NC-BC highlighted the importance of the 1991 Island Plan, “a vision that captured the sentiment of the people in favour of a sustainable model that would conserve our natural heritage, our territory and our unique culture.”

Other groups that will be represented on the march include the César Manrique Foundation and the Juan Brito Foundation,

The organisers of the march, which bears the slogan “Lanzarote Has a Limit”, have requested political parties and other associations to join the rear of the march, stressing that it should be led by ordinary, anonymous citizens.  The demonstration will gather at the bandstand on Arrecife’s seafront near the Puente de las Bolas at midday and proceed to the Cabildo. Traffic is certain to be suspended along the seafront road, although details have not yet been announced.

Earlier this week, the president of Lanzarote’s Tourist Federation, described the upcoming tourism demonstrations as a “call to order”.

UPDATE: We attended the demonstration this today, Saturday April 20th. Read our report here.
