Two of Lanzarote’s taxi associations have called off the strike they were threatening for Easter week.
Cabildo Transport Minister Domingo Cejas announced that an agreement of “joint provision” of services had been reached, and that the threatened strike would no longer take place.
The Norte y Sur group, representing cabbies from Yaiza, Haría, Teguise, Tinajo and Tias; and the Ajey Tamia group from San Bartolomé, had called for a reduction to minimum services over the coming days, when thousands of tourists will arrive on the island for Easter week.
The dispute concerns the priority rights that cabbies from one municipality have when operating in another part of the island. Cejas said that “specific circumstances must be met so that taxi drivers from one municipality are able to pick up in another.”
Cejas also announced the formation of an Island Taxi Committee, where the three taxi associations, the Cabildo, and the island’s councils can work towards a more permanent solution to the problems of the island’s taxi services.
