The “Fobos” sculpture, one of César Manrique’s wind toys, on the Tahiche roundabout will now be illuminated at night for the first time ever.

Fobos is located at the site of the crossroads where Manrique lost his life in a car accident in 1992, a short distance from the César Manrique Foundation.

César Manrique’s Fobos sculpture underwent an extensive maintenance work last year and was reinstated at the roundabout in Tahiche last November.

This month, the Cabildo announced that it would install lighting underneath the sculpture to illuminate it at night, demonstrating “the importance of the legacy of Manrique”, according to head of public works, Jacobo Medina.

The work is now complete, and the sculpture can be seen brilliantly lit up at night.

“It has been a unique and historic moment, to see that we have not only restored the toy, but it is also visible at night hours for the first time,” explained Medina.

Medina thanked the work of the staff for carrying out this lighting installation “in record time”. “We fulfil our goal of sprucing up, modernising and illuminating the wind toys of César Manrique, and I think there is no better start than with ‘Fobos’,” he said.
