José Valle, President of Lanzarote’s Chamber of Commerce, has said there “needs to be a limit” on holiday rentals.
Speaking to Canarias7, Valle said “Holiday rental accommodation needs to exist. It has helped us diversify our economy. The tourist who comes to a quality rental gets to know the island, eats at our restaurants, puts money into the local economy.”
“But there has to be regulation,” he continued. “We have to set minimum standards of quality, as with hotels.”
Valle said that holidays rentals could not exist everywhere, and not all types of property could be used for it. He also stated that “You have to pay taxes to be a solution and not a problem.”
The Canarian Government is currently drafting a new law that is widely expected to place limits on holiday rentals in an attempt to tackle the housing crisis on the islands. The law will be presented in late January.
