A 47-year-old Polish tourist drowned yesterday while bathing off Órzola’s beach.

Emergency services received calls just before 3pm, alerting that a swimmer was in trouble about 50 metres offshore. A woman who was with the victim had been rescued by local surfers earlier.

Two ambulances and a rescue helicopter attended the scene, and a body was later recovered. Attempts at resuscitation were fruitless.

The Canarian Government issued an orange alert for rough sea conditions on Sunday, advising people not to bathe. The Playa de Órzola is a “wild beach”, which is not attended by lifesavers and does not raise warning flags.

Lanzarote is now on yellow alert until midday today.
