Arrecife Ayuntamiento handed out its annual tourism awards on Friday night, in a special event at the capital’s old marketplace, the Recova.
The awards went to the Cafeteria San Francisco, the underground cafeteria on the capital’s main shopping street Calle Real which is famous for its churros. The cafeteria was founded in 1978 by Cristobal Romero and now has a large, busy outdoor terrace.
Another award went to Juan Méndez, the local photographer who has had several amazing shots of the island published in Spain’s National Geographic magazine.
A third sporting award went to Alejandro Hernández, the Arrecife-born football referee who has presided over 199 top-level games in La Liga and is currently one of only three Spanish refs in the UEFA Elite grouping.
