Guardia Civil union has complained that the presence of ex-President José Luís Zapatero on the island is putting the island’s security at risk.

As ex-President, Zapatero is given 24-hour protection and a personal escort, which is provided by the local Guardia Civil. A UnionGC spokesman has claimed that this stretches human resources, especially at the busiest time of year.

UnionGC have claimed that Zapatero’s decision to extend his stay at his home in Famara required Guardia Civil patrols that should have been deployed protecting citizens during the Romeria de los Dolores last weekend.
