Two desalination plants that are intended to relieve the water shortages on Lanzarote have arrived from La Palma and will soon be ready to operate once installed at the Díaz Rijo Desalination Plant near Arrecife.
The two portable plants were used during the volcanic eruption on La Palma, but have been transported to Lanzarote, where water leaks and breakdowns have led to water cuts throughout August, mainly in rural areas.
The two new machines will produce a total of 5,000 square metres of fresh water a day by a process of reverse osmosis, filtering sea water through semi-permeable membranes at high pressure.
