2.4 million tourists came on walking holidays to the Canaries last year, according to Turismo de Canarias.
The company, part of the Canarian Government, is campaigning to attract more hikers to the islands to boost an activity that is already the sixth-most important for holiday makers.
Spanish nationals are the keenest walkers, forming 17.5% of visitors. They are closely followed bty Germans on 17%.
The profile of hikers is attractive to tourist authorities, as they tend to be independent travellers who are more likely to support the local economy by hiring cars and eating in local restaurants. As over 64% are return visitors, they are also a faithful market.
Walking holidays are generally more popular on the western islands, with their forests and peaks, but Lanzarote is also seeing a rise in walking.
