Playa Honda’s San Juan bonfire was cancelled at the last minute yesterday to protect the breeding areas of Kentish plovers.

San Bartolomé Ayuntamiento was forced to cancel the event when an environmental report was received warning that crowds on the beach could damage the breeding zones of the Kentish plover, a threatened species.

The little birds can sometimes be seen rushing along the seashore, pecking at tiny creatures. They lay their eggs in shallow dents on beaches or salt flats, meaning they are particularly vulnerable to disturbance.

Opposition members on San Bartolomé council criticized Mayor Isidro Pérez for the decision, claiming that the  protected area for the birds  has been established since 14th June, leaving time to organise an alternative venue.
