Raul Díaz, the man accused of killing 25-year-old Romina Celeste and dismembering her body in January 2019, will finally face trial on Lanzarote on June 2nd.

36 potential jurors will be contacted from the 10th June, and the trial will commence with the selection of a 12-person jury who will decide the guilt of the accused,. The trial is expected to finish before 16th June.

Díaz is charged with murder, continued abuse, wounding and desecration of a corpse. His defence claims that he found the body of his wife already dead at their home and, under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, concealed the crime and disposed of the body.

Díaz was controversially released from Tahiche prison earlier this year after the four-year period during which a prisoner can be held in custody awaiting trial expired. He is currently in Madrid, where he must attend a police station every week.

Emilia Zaballos, the lawyer representing Romina’s family, has said that “What I have to express is happiness after so many delays and irregularities – which will not go unaccounted for.”
