A Tenerife-based energy company plans to drill in Yaiza to investigate the possibility of sources of geothermal energy outside of the Timanfaya National park.

Ramrei Energy have requested permission to drill from the Canarian Government  after preliminary investigations that lead them to believe that “in certain areas, the magma is very close to the earth’s surface.”

Exploratory drilling would take place in a 76 square kilometre area over a three-year period, and the company has given assurances that the impact on the environment will be minimal. “This is an attempt to generate clean, cheap and sustainable energy,” they announced.
