The chiringuito (beach bar and restaurant) at Playa Garita in Arrieta will be closed and demolished, Haría Ayuntamiento announced yesterday.
The kiosk overlooking the beach has been a popular meeting place for locals and visitors ever since it opened in 1998. However, when it opened it only had a two-year lease from the Coastal Department, and this permission has not been renewed in the last 23 years.
After requesting a report on the legal status of the bar, Mayor Evelia Garcia said that the “non-legal” situation could not continue and ownership of the facilities must return to to the council. Haría plan to demolish the existing construction, build new facilities and open a tender process to operate them. To do this it will take advantage of EU funds that have been set aside to improve the seafront.
