Emergency services carried out their second volcano rescue of the weekend yesterday when they evacuated a 77-year-old woman from the Montaña Caldera Blanca in Tinajo.
An emergency call was received at 2.30 pm yesterday to which firemen responded and discovered that the woman had suffered an ankle injury and was unable to continue walking. Her leg was splinted and a helicopter belonging to the the GES (Emergency and Rescue Group) airlifted her to the helipad at the fire station in Arrecife, from where she was taken the short distance to hospital.
The incident follows a similar rescue at the Volcán del Cuervo on Saturday, although no helicopter was used in that incident.
The walk to the rim of the Caldera Blanca is one of the most spectacular walks on the island. However, it takes place almost entirely on rough lava terrain, with a final steep ascent on a narrow path in the loose scree.
