Three people were injured last night when part of the raised seating area at the Recinto Ferial in Arrecife collapsed during a carnival event.
The Recinto Ferial is the large marquee located near the Cabildo building, and a large crowd had attended to see the competition of murgas – the satirical singing groups . While the finalists were bneing announced, part of the seating area collapsed, with two people falling through to the ground and a pregnant woman getting trapped in the structure.
Ambulances rushed all three victims to the hospital for treatment,. Two, including the pregnant woman , have since been discharged while a third remains in the hospital.
The incident caused tension when some members of the murgas confronted Arrecife’s councillor for fiestas about the poor state of the venue, which they had been complaining about.
