Lanzarote’s Tourist Federation has criticised a conservation plan as “too prohibitive” and claimed that it will have an adverse effect on tourist activities.
The Red Natura 2000 plan establishes three Special Conservation Zones (ZECs) in Lanzarote, and these zones include almost the entire coastline of Puerto del Carmen, where there are underwater caves that form a vital natural habitat as well as sandbanks and sea grass meadows.
New regulations under the Red Natura 2000 have been criticized as too strict by Lanzarote’s Federation of Tourist Businesses (FTA).
In a recent meeting with Canarian tourist minister Yaiza Castilla, the FTA called for more scientific evidence to justify the measures taken by Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition; and are calling for the ministry to reconsider the need to apply for official licences for certain marine activities.
Sources say that Tourist Minister expressed “understanding and support”.
