A plague of mosquitoes in Playa Honda has been traced to water purification plant in the grounds of the airport.

Residents of the western area of Playa Honda adjacent to the airport, an area which includes Calle Mastíl and the secondary school, had recently complained about the nuisance caused by the mosquitoes. Council workers then traced the plague to the airport and have carried out measures to eradicate the mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, which means their presence often increases in the days following heavy rains. They also prefer the still, calm weather that Lanzarote has enjoyed in recent weeks, and are most active at twilight.
