A new roundabout will be created on the top of the hill in Macher, in the zone known as La Calderina, on the stretch of the LZ2 between the existing roundabout that leads to Puerto Calero (with Yaiza secondary school) and the roundabout to Puerto del Carmen (with the Eurospar).

The main purpose of the roundabout will be to permit traffic to change direction on the 2 kilometre stretch of road that lies between the two roundabouts, and which currently has a continuous white line for all its distance, meaning that any changes of direction are forbidden. According to Lanzarote’s Cabildo, this will “avoid illegal and irregular maneuvers that are currently placing drivers, passengers and pedestrians at risk.”

The Cabildo added that the roundabout would serve “to guarantee the safety of road users and lighten the load of traffic that this stretch of the LZ2 has to bear as it passes through the heart of Macher, which is estimated as 16,685 vehicles a day.”

The contract for the works have already been awarded to Hormigones Insulares andTransportes y Excavaciones Tiagua, who will work to a budget of just under a million Euros. If all goes well, the roundabout should be ready by the summer of 2022.
