Germany has joined The Netherlands and Denmark by adding the Canaries to its green list of destinations from which returning tourists are not required to quarantine.
The Netherlands green-listed the Canaries last weekend, meaning that Dutch tourists will not require tests or quarantine on return, and Danish visitors will not have to quarantine from today. Nevertheless, all arrivals will have to comply with Spanish law and provide proof of a negative PCR test taken 72 hours before travel.
Canarian President Ángel Victor Torres described the announcement by the German Foreign Office as “wonderful news”.
Meanwhile, in London, Boris Johnson dropped a hint that Spain and the Canaries should not hold their breath for inclusion on the UK’s green list any time soon. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said yesterday that the UK’s green list was a “tiny list of countries and I don’t expect we will be adding to it very rapidly.”
Reviews of the UK’s safe travel lists are to be undertaken every three weeks following the country’s reopening to international travel on the 17th May. Earlier this week, Spain’s tourism minister Reyes Maroto proposed that good Covid figures and a high vaccination rate could mean that UK travellers would not require a PCR test on entry, although amber list restrictions mean they would still require two on return, as well as ten days quarantine.
