The Cabildo has proposed the use of special buses and monitors to reduce tensions after various incidents involving young migrants on the last bus to Tinajo.

Currently many of the young migrants who arrive on Lanzarote are being accommodated at the Albergue de Tinajo, an isolated hostel in the north of the island. As a result, many come to Arrecife on a regular basis, usually catching the last bus home.

Tensions have arisen on some journeys, and footage of a local man punching and shouting at a group of young migrants went viral earlier this week.  An anonymous bus driver told Cadena Ser that incidents have been occurring for around four years.

The Cabildo’s Welfare Councillor, Marci Acuña, yesterday announced “We’ve decided to provide separate buses for these youngsters and, if they use public transport, a monitor will accompany them.”

The Cabildo also repeated its request that the Spanish government relocate the young migrants in other centres, so that the hostel in Tinajo can be used for school trips and other activities again.
