Lanzarote remains on a yellow alert for high winds and suspended dust in the air (calima) until midnight tonight.

Although storm Dorothea has not not affected Lanzarote to the same degree as the western Canaries, it still brought a day of chaotic weather conditions, with high winds and a continuation of Monday’s thick calima.

Worst-affected was La Graciosa, where fences and pergolas were blown over and some houses were affected by heavy drifts of wind-borne sand.

The number of airborne contaminants was classed as “extremely unhealthy” and “risky” during the worst hours of the calima on Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon. However, Wednesday appears to have dawned with much clearer conditions and the air quality at 8 am this morning was classed as “good” to “moderate” at stations in Arrecife and Costa Teguise.
