The Gazette life team would like to wish Dolores Fernández Marrero a belated happy 100th birthday. She celebrated her very special birthday this week on Wednesday, August 17th.

Dolores’ life, who is the granddaughter of the famous poet of Las Breñas, Víctor Fernández Gopar (whose name you’ll recognised as the one that the theatre in Arrecife is named after), is one of hard work in the fields.

Looking back on her life she said, “everything was work! There were no Sundays off, and sometimes I didn’t rest for three months”, without losing her smile. She spent hours and hours, years and years, in the fields dedicated to harvesting barley, wheat and millet, “from sunrise to sunset. Today it’s a different world”, she added.

She celebrated her birthday this week with her family and visitors (most notably the Mayor of Yaiza). She told the story of how she met her husband Miguel Sepúlveda, “simple, we went to one of the old dances and he caught my eye.”. They would go on to have a family with four children.
