Cabildo President, Oswaldo Betancort, and the Councillor for Sports, Juan Monzón, met with Belgian athlete, Jean Van de Steen, who recently won the Vuelta a Playa Blanca Handbike race.
Betancort said that Van de Steene is “a top athlete, a lover of Lanzarote and the nature that the island offers to practice sport. We received a world champion in a sport increasingly practiced as is the handbike, that fills us with pride and demonstrates the sporting potential of our island.”.
The Councillor for Sports, Juan Monzón, also congratulated the athlete “for the undisputed victory last month in Playa Blanca”. “We knew the potential of Jonas Van de Steene, and we are convinced that he has many challenges and many awards to achieve in his career,” he said.
Jonas Van de Steene was last year’s world handbike champion in Glasgow with a time of 1:33:50 and is currently preparing for the Paralympics in Paris 2024.
