Workplace accidents increased by 33% on Lanzarote this year, according to the Cabildo’s statistics centre, with an average of 200 incidents a month.
The figures reflect the increased amount of economic activity on the island and recent increases in employment.
Around 2,000 incidents resulted in time off work, and the vast majority of them were classified as “minor”. Unfortunately, two workplace deaths have also been registered during the year so far: a man who was electrocuted while repairing a water pump in Playa Blanca in June; and a worker at the Zonzamas recycling centre who fell beneath a pile of bottles.
