This year’s wine harvest is forecast to reach 2 million kilogrammes – enough to meet the demand of the island’s bodegas, but not nearly as much as last year’s record harvest of over 3 million kilos of grapes.
Winter heatwaves, severe drought and a relatively cool springtime are the main factors affecting this year’s vines, and the crop is described as variable, with some vines already bearing well-developed fruit while others have hardly started. As a result, the harvest is expected to extend from July to the end of August.
1,843 wine growers will sell their products to the bodegas, the fruit of around 1,890 hectares of land. A good price of around €3 per kilo is expected to be paid for the wine.
The presence of large numbers of tourists is expected to bolster the market after the decline of other market niches as a result of the high price of the island’s wines.
