This year we’ve already seen several alerts for rough seas off the coast of Lanzarote. Here’s what to do when the sea fills with white horses.
In rough conditions, Lanzarote’s north coast should be treated with maximum respect. Bathing is unadvisable at any time of year – that’s why there’s a permanent red flag at Famara – and if the sea is rough and a warning is in place, it’s also wise to stay well clear of piers, rocky outcrops and other exposed areas. A good tip is: if the rocks are wet, stay off them.
The south coast is far better protected but can also get rough at times. Lifeguards’ flags will warn you about the safety of bathing on tourist beaches in the resorts, but in other areas it’s wise not to take any chances at all.
Going to sea is a different matter, at least for the Lanzarote islanders who have been doing it for generations. The ferries linking the island with Fuerteventura and La Graciosa are not just tourist services – they are vital connections for islanders, and it usually takes very rough weather before ferries are cancelled.
It does happen, though. La Graciosa was cut off for a couple of days last year and has previously remained isolated for up to a week. Nevertheless, it’s still surprising to see what kinds of sea the skilled skippers will put to sea in.
The ferry to La Graciosa can be choppy even on fairly calm days, as the stretch where the Rio meets the open sea can be turbulent. If you like a bit of adventure and an unforgettable experience, the lively voyage to an unspoilt island can be the highlight of your holiday.
If you’re prone to seasickness consider taking antinausea tablets before sailing and, if you’re heading to Fuerteventura bear in mind that, while some are affected by the rapid movement of smaller boats, others find the slow, rolling heaves of larger boats much worse.
Although rough seas are part of ocean life, remember that the captains of these companies are highly skilled and your safety is always their main priority. If you have any questions or concerns, simply ask the ferry company- they’re always happy to help.
