The controversial wall that has blocked views of views of Puerto Naos, the fishing quay in Arrecife, is finally being demolished.
The wall, which consists of closely spaced, strangely twisted concrete posts, has been nicknamed the “wall of shame” by locals, who complain that it completely cut off views of Arrecife’s traditional fishing zone.
In 2019, the representative and engineer of the company that built the wall were sentenced to 18 months prison for industrial plagiarism, after a court found they had copied the design from another company responsible for walls in Gran Canarian and Fuerteventura.
The wall was built around 20 years ago to restrict access to the port area, which had become a site where young people gathered at night in cars. On one occasion, a car fell into the sea, drowning a five-year-old child.
Arrecife Ayuntamiento plans to convert the zone into a park.
