Lanzarote manager Juan Carlos Socorro demanded a reaction from his players after a hugely disappointing 1-2 away defeat to lowly CD Buzanada on the 19th of January. What he got a week later was nothing short of remarkable as his troops thrashed mid-table side CD Santa Úrsula 7-0.
Lanzarote were leading 2-0 at half time but five minutes into the second half the game was dead and buried as the Rojillos left their opponents in a daze with a further three goals, to set up a 5-0 lead. The only criticism was that it was not double figures as Lanzarote hit the woodwork on two occasions and a couple of sitters went begging.
The Tenerife side had only conceded four goals in their previous five outings and in the following two weeks they earned two draws against strong sides competing for playoff positions. Sometimes football is impossible to understand, but what was certain was that Lanzarote had played their best league match in years.
Unfortunately, the Rojillos did not build on this performance as the next two matches both ended in stalemate. Lanzarote´s hopes of finishing as champions of RFEF 3 (Fifth Tier) and claiming that single automatic promotion spot are diminishing as they trail league leaders UD Las Palmas B by 10 points with 13 matches remaining.
The Rojillos are in third spot, five points clear of CD Marino who are just outside the playoffs in sixth. The players understand that every match is paramount because finishing in second place would guarantee another Copa Del Rey match for next season if the B side of Las Palmas win the league as their first team is already in the cup.
On recent form a playoff finish is far from a certainty but with an improved defence and terrific attacking options Rojillo fans should feel confident.
The team are still playing at their temporary home in Tías but a return to Arrecife and to our home ground Ciudad Deportiva is nearing. The surface has been laid, and the players are delighted with it. The running track around the pitch is not far from completion so hopefully a return home should be soon.
