Two road traffic deaths have been registered on Lanzarote in the year so far on inter-urban highways, according to figures from the Traffic Department (DGT).

The total on the Canaries has risen from 37 to 50 in the same time period – the highest figure since 2012.   18 died in Tenerife, 10 on Gran Canaria, nine on Fuerteventura, seven in La Palma, three on La Gomera and one on El Hierro.

Both incidents on Lanzarote appear to be the result of a horrific accident on the LZ-40 road near Puerto del Carmen in January, in which two women lost their lives. The DGT’s figures, however, do not include incidents in towns and villages, such as the motorcyclist who died in Arrecife in August.

The DGT pointed out that alcohol or other drugs are involved in 28% of fatal accidents in Spain this year, and warns that random road checks will be increased over the Christmas period.
