November is a big month for Malpaís Records, Lanzarote’s only record label.

Last week saw the release of loscoloresdelaspiedras the debut album by Pleito, a.k.a Gran Canarian saxophonist Alba Gil Aceytuno. Using circular breathing techniques and swirling arpeggios, Alba creates hypnotic, evocative soundscapes that features touches of jazz, ambient and electronic music, all with a distinctly Canarian flavour. We grabbed a copy yesterday and we’re loving it.

Next Thursday, Malpais will release Peach Please, the long-waited debut of Lanzarote-based coastal rock band DRÛPE. Two excellent singles and videos – Ready For It and Party – have whetted the appetite for this record, and Camy, Matt, Seb and Sly will be presenting the album with a live performance at El Almacén in Arrecife on 19th December.

Both albums and much more music can be found at malpaisrecords.bandcamp.com, and if you want to go into a shop and come out holding a shiny new piece of vinyl just like in the old days, they’re also available at La Madriguera, the excellent little second-hand bookshop at C/ Antonio Porlier y Sopranis 6 in Arrecife.
