The Canarian Government has authorised two access roads to the sea from the Sandos Papagayo Hotel in Playa Blanca, despite the opposition of the Spanish state.

According to Mayor Óscar Noda, the owner of the hotel plans two access roads, one in the Los Colorados Plan and another “closer to the cliff”.  Despite the approval of the Canarian Government’s Coastal Directorate for the two access roads (which goes against a report by the Spanish Coastal Department) Noda repeated that the hotel remained illegal and he “would be the first with a pick and shovel” if it to be demolished.

The Sandos Papagayo’s licence was declared null in 2007 after it was shown that construction of the hotel blocked public access to the beach. This planning offence was among those for which ex-Mayor José Francisco Reyes received a six-year jail sentence. In 2017 a demolition order was issued against the Sandos Papagayo; however, it has remained open for 17 years and Lanzarote’s Cabildo has stated that it wished to legalize the hotel.
