Socialist councillors in Lanzarote’s Cabildo have proposed a 25-kilometre public transport system connecting Lanzarote’s most important towns and facilities.
The opposition councillors have proposed the commissioning of a feasibility study for a “high capacity, low-emissions public transport line running between Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen, via Arrecife and the Airport.
The “light, silent, and non-polluting surface transport system” would “alleviate traffic and reduce emissions, but also improve the quality of life for those who live and work on the island,” according to Socialist spokesperson Ariagona González.
She added “This project would not only alleviate traffic and reduce emissions, but also improve the quality of life for those who live and work on the island.”
It is not the first time that a train or metro line has been proposed along this area of Lanzarote’s coast, but previous proposals have ended in nothing. Nevertheless, the island’s continuing dependence on private cars and its ever-rising number of vehicles are an increasing source of concern for the authorities.
Currently the only similar projects on the Canaries are the tram system that operates in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and a proposed railway on the east coast of Gran Canaria that will not commence construction until 2027. A rail system on Lanzarote would be an immense project requiring a huge investment.
It would not, however, be the first railway on Lanzarote. In 1908 a short railway was built in Arrecife to carry stone from an inland quarry in order to build the city’s main pier.
