Today, Friday 6th December, is a public holiday in Spain. Added to the weekend, this forms a “puente” (bridge) – a long weekend when many people take a short holiday.
There are usually two public holidays in early December, but the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, on 8th December, already falls on a Sunday this year and the holiday has not been moved.
However, schools will be on holiday on Monday 9th, as the Day of the Educator has been moved to that date by the Canarian Government.
Today’s holiday marks the 46th anniversary of the 1978 referendum in which the Spanish people voted in favour of the Spanish Constitution, completing the transition to democracy after decades of dictatorship.
As usual on public holidays, larger shopping centres, supermarkets and many shops and bars in the resorts are unlikely to be affected, but the capital, Arrecife, and many smaller towns and villages will see many closures.
